William Howard Taft: President and Chief Justice
William Howard Taft is the only American to have served both as president of the United States and chief justice of the Supreme Court. Born in Cincinnati in 1857, Taft graduated from Yale and built a respected legal career before serving as a federal judge, civil administrator of the Philippines, and secretary of war. Elected president in 1908, he pursued antitrust cases, strengthened federal oversight of railroads, established a postal savings system, and supported constitutional amendments authorizing a federal income tax and the direct election of senators. Political divisions within the Republican Party contributed to his defeat in 1912. Taft later taught law at Yale before
becoming chief justice in 1921—a role he considered the greatest honor of his public career.
